A Hijacked Apology – Marisol And Grady

Marisol

A thesaurus couldn’t find the right words to describe Grady if it had forever. I’m not entirely sure what just happened, but the man had tenacity. It was flattering that he would bother since I wasn’t just saying no I was pushing him away. Actually I fake stabbed him in the heart and turned him into a zombie who eats ice cream. I have too much on the go for this level of distraction, and yet I couldn’t resist. How could a grown man be so silly? Okay, I often see grown men act like drunken children who ate a pound of sugar, but still.

His warm hand closed around mine the moment I touched his fingers. The warmth grew into heat and from that heat came hot pleasure flutters deep inside my core. I laboured to breathe, and our eyes met. Oh good, he was as terrified as I was. Wait, he felt this too? Before I could tug my hand free, he tightened his hold, and in that one possessive gesture, I was lost. Those flutters kept up their attack and my chest tightened. How am I going to resist him now?

“Ice cream.” He said to snap us out of the stupor, and we began walking.

I chewed my lip as we walked hand in hand. It was something a couple would do. Would he now become dull with the froth of tedious conversation? He hasn’t yet, so why would I worry now? He ran his thumb across my fingers and I tugged my hand again because this was too much.

“No way, Marisol. You can run away after we have ice cream. You owe me.”

“For what?”

“Your apology.”

“Aren’t I supposed to pick the apology… or what was it you called it? Right a hang out.”

“Were you ever going to?”

He had me there. I was not. I had planned never to see him again. Of course, planning and fate don’t play by the same rules. Honestly what harm can come from befriending him? Well a lot actually, but did it matter? I liked his company, and he has managed to make me laugh a lot in fifteen minutes. Either he’s naturally silly, or he’s trying hard. Maybe it’s both.

“No.”

“Then I’m hijacking your apology, and you have to.”

“What if I have plans?”

“Do you?” He let my hand go and crossed his arms.

“Not until later.” I lied, at least I was giving him my time for now. Later wasn’t up for grabs.

“Great,” Grady grinned. “Then I’ll trust you to wait here,” He gestured at a patio table, “And I’ll be right back.”

Trust. He went up to the… I wasn’t sure what to call it. It wasn’t a restaurant since it had no indoor seating and they had a walk-up window. I suppose it was a concession. I know the walk up window concept was hot and trendy. That’s what Cecily was doing with her little café, and it was a huge hit. The window menu was more limited, but people loved the idea of walking up and away without having to go in and smell like a coffee shop for the rest of the day. It is basically drive through without the car. At least that’s how she was promoting it.

Grady didn’t even ask what kind of ice cream I wanted. I wondered what he would pick for me. He came back with a large wax paper cup and a paper box of French fries.

“I’m sorry, I half expected you to bolt.” He said with the cutest nervous expression possible.

“Is that why you didn’t bring me ice cream?”

He grinned as he sat and I wanted to poke his chin dimple again.

“Oh, but I did.”

He took the plastic lid from what looked like the creamiest chocolate milkshake.

“It’s too thick to eat with a straw.” He said and held up two spoons.

“What’s the point of a too thick milkshake?” I asked and eyed the fries with the tempting tiny grains of salt clinging to them.

“This.” He said and picked up a thick cut fry, dipped it into the ice cream and held it out for me.

“That is disgusting.”

“If you don’t then this isn’t a proper apology, and you’ll have to try again.”

“I’m not even-”

He shoved the chocolate ice cream covered French fry in my mouth. There was no way I’d spit it out and make a scene or a mess on my dress. Therefore, I pulled the fry in entirely and chewed. The sweet, creamy ice cream complemented the starch and salt of the French fry. I’ll be damned it was delicious.

“I take it you’re not going to punch me for that?”

“Oh I might, but only because I don’t-”

He did it again. Dammit, why wasn’t I on guard enough to stop him from shoving food into my mouth?  I covered my mouth with my hand, I couldn’t contain my laughter at his overly pleased look.

“What are you twelve?”

His reply was to eat his own ice cream dipped French fry. As he chewed with a smirk, he held up another fry.

I snatched if from his fingers with a glare and dunked it myself. “I think I hate you.”

“If you do, why are you still here?”

I paused with the disgusting concoction just before I ate it. Good question, “paying a debt.”

“Uh huh,” He held up a long-handled plastic spoon, and I plucked it from his grasp.

I stuck my tongue out at him, and we both burst out laughing. Grady’s silliness was contagious, and if I were honest, I loved that he made me laugh easily. The man threw himself on the ground to get my attention. The last man I dated gave me flowers once and expected sex, and he only noticed my breasts and shoes. Yeah, it was weird, and I lost his number quickly.

We had a spoon war when we got to the bottom of the cup, and somehow I ended up with a dab on my nose which made us laugh even harder. I’m blaming the sugar. Grady gently wiped it off with a napkin. It was a sweet and tender gesture that told me more about him than anything he’s done thus far.

The trill of my cell phone snapped the moment in two and plunged the pieces into the cold depths of reality. I expected Grady to be offended or give me that offensive gesture that it was ‘okay’ for me to answer my own phone. He did neither. He just waited for me to act. If this were a date, I wouldn’t have had the ringer on. I answered because I have to.

“Proxy Po, how may I help you?”

Mare-Mare you weren’t supposed to answer. You promised.” Chris scolded.

I looked at the private number, “you sneaky devil. You’re right. I’m sorry.”

Swear you will enjoy the rest of the night off and won’t answer your phone again.” Chris demanded.

“I swear,” I said and glanced sideways at Grady who was still just waiting.

No, say it back to me and no muttering.”

If I refused, he would make it worse. It was better just to give Chris what he wants to shut him up.

“I swear I’ll enjoy the night off,” I said through clenched teeth, and yes, Grady let a smile tip the corner of his lips. “And I won’t answer my phone.”

Good girl. Now go do something you would never do, so anything except work will do. Maybe a man?”

I ended the call not dignifying Chris’s comment with a response.

“Night off huh? Big plans?” Grady said barely containing his delight.

“No.” I looked at my phone.

People don’t usually have big plans on a Sunday evening. It’s our slowest night. Chris had called it the training wheels night and said if I were to let him give me a day off that was a good day to start. He was right. Monday through Wednesday was good too, mostly booking and meeting new clients. While I’m a busy woman, everything I do can be delegated if necessary. Grady had mischief in his eyes, an expression that I was beginning to crave like chocolate ice cream dipped French fries.

Man now I want chocolate dipped french fries! Maybe for lunch that’s not from McDonalds, haha. I love that Grady shut her up by shoving food into her mouth. The quickest way to a woman’s heart is through her stomach! Or maybe that’s just me cause I love food. Loved this installment and can’t wait to see if her night off results in night in with Grady. 😉
